What is Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication?
According to Professor Albert Mehrabian’s research on
communication, (http://www.kaaj.com/psych), there are 3
components in communication:
 | | Verbal Communication (Oral), message pertaining to |
| | feelings and attitudes is in the words that are spoken;
|
 | | Non-Verbal Communication (Speech), message pertaining |
| | to feelings and attitudes is paralinguistic - the way that the words are said; and
|
 | | Non-Verbal Communication (Visual), message pertaining to |
| | feelings and attitudes is in facial expression.
|
Verbal Communications is understood as an oral or spoken
communication. Some of the key components of verbal
communication are words, speaking, and language. This
component contributes 7% of the communication process.
Non-Verbal Communication is usually understood as the
process of communication through sending and receiving wordless
messages.
These could be through gesture and touch, by body language or
posture as well by facial expression and eye contact. Hence
personal image and etiquette, such as clothing, hairstyles a visual
presentation play an important role here. This component
contributes 55% of the communication process.
Another component in Non-Verbal Communication is speech,
which includes voice quality, emotion and speaking style, rhythm,
intonation and voice expression. This component contributes 38%
of the communication process.
